The Seattle Office of Housing (OH) announces funding awards at this year’s annual housing celebration.
The City of Seattle hosted its Annual Housing Celebration this week, where Mayor Bruce Harrell, alongside OH, affordable housing developers, and community partners, highlighted the city’s efforts in combating the affordable housing crisis. Held at El Centro de la Raza, the event announced investments in affordable rental housing and homeownership, while also recognizing achievements in anti-displacement efforts and green energy initiatives.
Funding awards for the rental housing program through OH’s Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) were announced to support the construction of 443 affordable rental homes. The City also announced 114 future affordable homeownership opportunities across neighborhoods in Seattle.
“There are times when in this community in this place we call home, here in Seattle, where the community comes together and they fight through very challenging times. And I try to look at people in their eyes and say that as mayor, I cannot do this without you. I do rely on your advocacy, your work, even your criticism, to keep us doing the right things. So, let’s build together; let’s house people together,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell, in his keynote announcement.
Leaders from various organizations shared their perspectives, emphasizing the importance of these investments in addressing housing inequities and supporting marginalized communities. Plans for transit-oriented development, senior housing initiatives, and efforts to combat gentrification were discussed, showcasing Seattle’s multifaceted approach.
As Seattle continues its commitment to tackling housing affordability, Maiko Winkler-Chin, Director of OH, emphasized the need for continued efforts in tackling housing affordability. Through strategic investments, collaborative partnerships, and a commitment to equity and inclusion, Seattle remains steadfast in its efforts to create a more equitable city for all.
